In the finale of “Someday in the rain” from the 9th season of *Cool * (also known as Cool 09), both Aki and Megumin go out to retrieve something, while the sky is covered in snow. Megumin sits alone in the club room reading a book, though she remains seated at her usual spot for most of the time. After Aki finishes moving bricks and goes back to the table where she lights the fire and falls asleep.

I just rewatched this episode after a long time, and found that Megumin actually doesn’t say a single word throughout the entire piece. She is truly silent and accompanied Megumin seems like the very essence of stillness and companionship. The scene also emphasizes environmental sounds, especially those from other clubs within the school. It’s no coincidence that so many clubs are conducting activities at the same time in this school; everyone is living a normal high school life in their own way. This episode is only a small part of them.

I have to admit, I don’t usually like Megumin all that much. I find her and carefree attitude tiring. It’s as if stepping out of a cold day after snowfall, shivering a bit from the accumulated snow on my body, sitting by Megumin’s cozy fire, flipping through books with my frozen hands slowly warming up, and experiencing both the warmth and the drowsiness creeping into my heart. I just need to relax completely when that scene comes up.

In this episode itself, I feel like everything is so at ease. Each time I watch that particular scene in “Someday in the rain,” it brings me complete relaxation. It’s as if the world has stopped, and I can fully sink into this moment, like stepping out of a cold day after snowfall and snuggled up by Megumin’s cozy fire while reading her book.
